Overview
Base44 is an AI app builder owned by Wix: you describe an app in a chat and it generates the screens, the data model and the logic, then keeps running it. Generated apps are React with React Router, built with Vite and styled with Tailwind CSS and the shadcn/ui component library, sitting on a managed backend that Base44 supplies rather than asking you to assemble: a NoSQL database, built-in user authentication, serverless functions on the Deno runtime, realtime updates over WebSocket and hosting. Stripe payments are set up from the same chat and cover cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and multiple currencies, connectors reach services such as Google Calendar, Gmail, Slack, Notion, HubSpot and Salesforce, and a finished app publishes to a Base44 address or a connected custom domain. The code is not sealed off: it can be edited in the Code tab, synced two-way with a GitHub repository, or pulled out with the CLI eject command into a standalone local project. Plans are metered in message and integration credits and start with a free tier.
Best for non-technical founders who want the fastest path from prompt to a working app.
Base44 suits founders and operators who want a running app rather than a code base to look after. The parts that usually eat a weekend, authentication, database, hosting and payments, arrive already wired together, and the free tier is enough to find out whether the idea holds. The trade is control: you work in message credits instead of a repository, the managed NoSQL backend is the one on offer, and the ways out are one-way, since GitHub sync cannot be undone and an ejected project starts with an empty database. Teams that expect to move onto their own infrastructure later should try that exit before they build on it.
