Overview

Xano is a backend-as-a-service platform: rather than generating a finished app, it produces the server side that one runs on. Data sits in PostgreSQL with Redis caching, and APIs are assembled in a visual logic builder that emits autogenerated OpenAPI documentation, with custom functions, lambdas, middleware and background tasks alongside. Authentication ships as working endpoints out of the box, /signup, /login and /me, on JWE tokens, with role-based access control and enterprise SSO through GitHub, Google and Microsoft. The frontend is left open on purpose: the vendor names React, Next.js, Flutter, Webflow and Framer as well as AI-generated frontends from Lovable and Bolt. The AI side runs in two directions. Natural language prompting builds inside the workspace, and an official MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other agents build against the same rules; the vendor frames its governance layer, branching and merging, immutable versioned releases, function-level workflow testing and a CLI that syncs XanoScript to disk, as the harness that keeps agent-written work reviewable. Hosting is either Xano's managed regions or self-hosted on Azure, AWS, GCP or on-premise, and the free tier is rate-limited rather than time-limited.

Best for teams building a scalable backend and API without managing servers, with the frontend built elsewhere.

This is the option for a team that has decided the backend is the part worth owning properly. Everything about it points the same way: the data model and the endpoints are the product, the interface is somebody else's problem, and the way out is kept open by self-hosting and by logic that can be read as files rather than clicked through a canvas. Against a platform where the app and its server are one inseparable thing, that is a meaningfully different bet, and it is the right one if the frontend is expected to be replaced at some point while the data is not. The catch is the shape of the ladder. There is a generous free tier, a quoted enterprise tier, and a first paid step at eighty-five dollars a month with very little in between, so a side project that outgrows the rate limits faces a real decision rather than a small one. Anyone who wants a working screen at the end of the first afternoon should reach for a prompt-to-app tool instead, and point it at this later.

Features

What it generates
The backend rather than the whole app: database, REST APIs, custom functions, middleware, background tasks and triggers, with the frontend left to another tool
Stack and frameworks
PostgreSQL with Redis caching and Docker microservices; logic is built visually or written as XanoScript, which the CLI syncs to files on disk; works with React, Next.js, Flutter, Webflow, Framer and AI-generated frontends from Lovable and Bolt
Auth and database
PostgreSQL with unlimited records from the Essential tier; authentication endpoints (/signup, /login, /me) ship by default on JWE tokens, with role-based access control and enterprise SSO through GitHub, Google and Microsoft
Hosting and deploy
Xano-managed hosting across multiple regions, or self-hosted on Azure, AWS, GCP or on-premise; releases are immutable versioned objects promoted through staging
Access to the code
XanoScript is readable and editable, and the CLI syncs the workspace to files on disk; APIs carry autogenerated OpenAPI documentation

Pros and Cons

Strengths

  • Self-hosting on Azure, AWS, GCP or on-premise, not only the vendor's cloud
  • Frontend-agnostic: pairs with React, Flutter, Webflow, Framer, Lovable or Bolt rather than dictating one
  • An official MCP server, so external AI agents build against the same workspace rules

Limitations

  • The first paid tier is $85 a month, a steep step up from the free one
  • It builds only the backend, so a second tool is needed for the interface
  • The free tier is rate-limited to 10 requests per 20 seconds and watermarks stored images
