Overview

Mendix is an enterprise low-code application platform owned by Siemens Industry Software. Developers work in Studio Pro, which produces an application model rather than a source tree; the Mendix Runtime then executes that model. The platform is organised around five capabilities the vendor names as enterprise context through an Enterprise Knowledge Graph, AI and ML model development, agentic development, process orchestration and enterprise governance, with Studio Pro, AI Studio and Graph Studio as the products behind them. Maia is the agentic AI built into the platform, and Maia Make runs multi-step development from requirements to working software, generating into visual models instead of code. A bring-your-own approach applies to the model, the data and the cloud: frontier, open-source or private LLMs, existing data systems without migration, and deployment to Mendix Cloud, Mendix on Kubernetes, Mendix on Azure, SAP Business Technology Platform or your own servers. Mendix Cloud runs on AWS, where every app uses PostgreSQL and no alternative database can be configured; self-managed deployments support MySQL and MariaDB, Oracle, SAP HANA and SQL Server. Apps publish REST and OData or GraphQL services, and custom logic enters through Java Actions and JavaScript Actions. Mendix has been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Low-Code Application Platforms for nine consecutive years.

Best for enterprise IT organisations that want AI-generated applications as governed visual models and the freedom to run them on their own cloud or servers.

The free tier is unusually generous for this class of software, but the jump from it is a cliff rather than a step, and that shapes who Mendix is for: an organisation that has already decided low-code is a platform commitment, not a team buying a tool to try something. What that commitment buys is a development model an operations team can actually reason about, because the generated artefact is a governed model with a runtime behind it rather than code someone now has to review. The costs sit in the same place. Cloud resources are billed on top of the subscription, so the sticker figure is a floor and not a total, and the Standard tier's fixed 9-to-5 support and 99.5 percent uptime mean a business that needs round-the-clock cover is looking at a quoted Premium contract from the start. Teams that want to run a pilot and expand it gradually should price the second step before they take the first.
