Overview
Perplexity is a search-first AI assistant. Instead of answering from memory, it runs a live web search on each question and returns a written answer with numbered, clickable sources, which makes it well suited to research and fact-checking. Pro and Max tiers add a model selector, file uploads and analysis, and image generation, while Spaces group related threads into a shared workspace. Perplexity also ships Comet, an AI-native browser that puts the assistant beside every web page, and a Sonar API for developers. It is deliberately narrower than a general assistant, better at finding sourced answers than at drafting long documents or writing production code.
Best for research, fact-checking and finding sourced answers to current questions.
Perplexity is the assistant to use when the source matters as much as the answer, because every reply cites where it came from, which is ideal for research and checking current facts. Paid tiers add model choice, file analysis and image generation on top. It is not built for long-form writing or serious coding, so pair it with a general assistant for that.
