Overview

Wan is the video model family published by Alibaba Cloud's large-scale generative models team, released both as downloadable weights and as a hosted service. The Wan2.2 generation is a set of task-specific models rather than one endpoint: T2V-A14B for text-to-video, I2V-A14B for image-to-video, a smaller TI2V-5B that handles both and generates 720P at 24 frames per second, S2V-14B for audio-driven generation from a speech track, and Animate-14B for animating or replacing a character in existing footage. The code and weights for Wan2.1 and Wan2.2 are published under the Apache 2.0 licence on GitHub, Hugging Face and ModelScope, with integrations for Diffusers and ComfyUI. Newer versions are reached through Alibaba Cloud Model Studio instead, where wan2.5 through wan2.7 add 1080P output, clip lengths of 2 to 15 seconds, prompts up to 5,000 characters and generated or supplied audio. A browser app at wan.video runs the same models for people who do not want to host anything.

Best for developers and studios that want to self-host an open video model or call one from their own product.

Wan suits a team that wants the model itself rather than a subscription around it, either to run on its own hardware or to call from its own product. The Apache 2.0 terms on the open releases are unusually permissive for a video model of this size, which is the main reason to pick it over a closed competitor. The catch is the split: the open weights stop at Wan2.2, and the newer models live behind the Alibaba Cloud API, so a plan built on self-hosting will sit a generation behind the hosted one. Anyone with data-residency constraints should settle that question before starting.

Features

Inputs
Text, image and speech: separate models cover text-to-video, image-to-video, a unified text and image model, and audio-driven speech-to-video
Editing control
Wan-Animate animates or replaces a character in existing footage; the API models take negative prompts and a watermark option
Character and shot consistency
Animate-14B is built for character animation and replacement, so the same figure carries into new footage
Audio and lip-sync
Yes, S2V-14B drives generation from a speech track, and the API models can generate audio alongside the video or take a supplied file
Generation speed
TI2V-5B generates a 5-second 720P clip at 24 frames per second in under 9 minutes on a single consumer card and needs at least 24GB of GPU memory; the T2V-A14B and I2V-A14B models need at least 80GB
API
Yes, via Alibaba Cloud Model Studio, with prompts up to 5,000 characters and clips of 2 to 15 seconds

Pros and Cons

Strengths

  • Wan2.1 and Wan2.2 weights are published under the Apache 2.0 licence
  • Separate models for text, image, speech and character animation rather than one general endpoint
  • Runs locally, with Diffusers and ComfyUI integrations, or through the Alibaba Cloud API
  • Audio-driven generation is part of the family, not a bolt-on

Limitations

  • Only Wan2.1 and Wan2.2 are published as open weights; wan2.5 to wan2.7 are API-only
  • Developed by Alibaba Cloud (China), so check your data-residency needs
  • Self-hosting the 14B models needs substantial GPU hardware

Pricing

  • Self-hosted
