Overview
Caspio builds online database applications without code, and it has been doing it on a SQL Server data core for more than two decades. Its AI builder, Caspi, takes a description of the app that is needed and generates the data model, the interface and the roles as a working application; the Flex visual builder then edits that app by drag and drop rather than replacing it. Underneath sit role and record-level security, encryption, audit trails, user directories and SAML single sign-on, plus automations for scheduled tasks and triggered actions. Three further AI capabilities surround the builder: connector extensions that call models to summarise, classify, extract and enrich data, an in-app chat agent for end users that respects role-based access, and an MCP server that lets external AI tools reach the data through the documented REST API. Apps deploy as complete standalone applications or as components embedded in a website, intranet or customer portal, running on AWS with data residency in the US, Canada, the EU, UK, Australia and South America. Compliance is the selling point the vendor leads with: HIPAA, SOC 2 Type II and GDPR are certified annually by independent audit rather than self-attested, with FERPA and WCAG support alongside. Pricing is flat per plan with unlimited app users, so cost tracks the number of builders rather than the size of the audience.
Best for regulated organisations building database applications and portals where HIPAA, SOC 2 or GDPR compliance has to be certified.
The price sits far above the rest of this category and the reason is on the invoice rather than in the feature list: annual third-party audits for HIPAA, SOC 2 Type II and GDPR, signed business associate agreements, six regions of data residency. A team in healthcare, education or government is buying that paperwork as much as the builder, and reproducing it elsewhere costs more than the subscription ever will. Everyone else should look hard at the arithmetic, because two hundred and seventy dollars a month buys a great deal of tooling in a field where the usual entry point is free. Where the flat pricing genuinely pays off is reach. App users are unlimited on every plan, so a portal opened to a few thousand patients, students or citizens costs the same as one used by a dozen staff, which is the opposite of how seat-priced platforms behave and the case where this stops looking expensive. The trade is permanence: what gets built stays on the platform, and the way in and out is the REST API rather than a codebase anyone could host themselves.

- Auth and database
- SQL Server with user directories and SAML single sign-on; record-level security controls which rows a given user sees
- Hosting and deploy
- Caspio-hosted on AWS; apps deploy standalone or embed as components in a website, intranet or customer portal, with data residency across six regions
- Access to the code
- Apps run on the platform; access to the data is through a documented REST API, webhooks and an MCP server rather than an exportable codebase
