Criterion AvidXchange Brex
Starting price Price on request AvidXchange publishes no amounts and no tiers. There is no pricing page in the site navigation; the product pages route to a demo request. Free; Premium $12 / user / month Essentials carries no software fee. Premium is 12 dollars per user per month. Enterprise and Smart Card are priced on request.
Users More than 8,000 customers, with a supplier network of 1.5 million More than 35,000 companies, per the vendor
API 240 pre-built connections to accounting and ERP systems. A developer portal exists at developer.avidxchange.com, but it is aimed at partners and sits behind a login Yes, REST APIs for accounting, budgets, expenses, payments, team, transactions and travel, with webhooks, plus an official MCP server at api.brex.com/mcp
Hosting Cloud (SaaS) Cloud (SaaS)
Made in United States, Charlotte, North Carolina United States
Invoicing and quotes Incoming supplier invoices: AI capture of header and line-item data, automated routing and approvals along existing workflows, and two- or three-way purchase order matching. The published solution set covers payables, so customer invoicing and accounts receivable are not part of it Incoming vendor invoices only: AI invoice capture, two-way matching against purchase orders, approval routing and payment by ACH, wire, check or virtual card
Bookkeeping and bank feeds No ledger of its own. The stated design goal is that the existing accounting system remains the system of record; invoices and payments sync to it, and detailed payment information files come back for reconciliation across 240 pre-built integrations No general ledger of its own; transactions, categories and receipts sync to NetSuite, QuickBooks, Xero and Sage Intacct
Expenses and receipts No employee expense or receipt management. The published solutions cover supplier invoices, purchase orders and supplier payments, not reimbursements or expense reports Yes, corporate cards with policy enforced at the swipe, AI and OCR receipt capture, auto-generated receipts for common merchants, and reimbursements in more than 40 countries
Tax and compliance 1099 support through reporting: filters list the suppliers paid $600 or more in a year, excluding card payments, as the basis for 1099-NEC filing, and paying suppliers by virtual card removes the 1099 requirement for those payments. Sales tax and VAT handling are not described VAT tracking is switched on by Brex Support and then captures the tax portion of a transaction apart from the tax-inclusive total and exports it to the ERP, supported for the NetSuite, Oracle Fusion and Custom Accounting integrations, with Canadian GST, PST, HST and QST handled the same way. On the vendor side, W-9 forms are collected and stored, vendors are flagged 1099 eligible and that data is exported at year end for filing elsewhere. Brex does not issue 1099-Ks
Payroll No payroll. The published solutions are accounts payable, invoice automation, purchase order automation, payment automation and AP as a Service No pay runs of its own. More than 40 HRIS and payroll systems connect, among them Gusto, Rippling, ADP Workforce Now, Paychex, Paylocity, Justworks, TriNet, Deel, Personio and Workday, and the connection provisions people and automates card issue and spend limits rather than paying them. Funding the run is covered by reverse wires, which let a provider such as ADP, Gusto or Sequoia One pull from the Brex business account as a wire instead of an ACH debit
Reports and exports Yes, AvidAnalytics reports on the payables and spend data collected in the platform, alongside real-time visibility into invoice approval and payment status Yes, real-time spend reporting with custom filters and live budgets, plus AI-assisted GL coding, duplicate detection and memo generation
Integrations and API 240 pre-built connections to accounting and ERP systems, including Oracle NetSuite, QuickBooks, Microsoft Dynamics, Sage, Acumatica, Blackbaud, MRI, Rent Manager and Yardi. The trade-offs

Strengths and Limitations

AvidXchange

Strengths

  • The existing accounting system stays the system of record, with payment files returned for reconciliation
  • 240 pre-built accounting and ERP connections, including property, association and fund accounting systems
  • Suppliers are paid through the AvidPay network rather than from a second banking workflow
  • Vertical coverage reaches sectors general AP tools rarely serve, such as community association management

Limitations

  • No published pricing at all, so a quote is the only way to size it
  • No general ledger, so it supplements accounting software rather than replacing it
  • Payables only, with no customer invoicing or accounts receivable

Brex

Strengths

  • Essentials carries no software fee, so the entry plan is usable indefinitely rather than for a trial period
  • Cards accepted in more than 120 countries, payments in more than 30 local currencies and reimbursements in more than 40 countries
  • Official MCP server, so an AI assistant can act in the account under the user's own permissions
  • Business account with free same-day ACH, domestic wires and checks, and up to 6 million dollars of FDIC coverage through the vault

Limitations

  • No general ledger, so an accounting system is still needed alongside
  • Built around US incorporation, which narrows eligibility for companies without US operations
  • The economics rest on running card spend through Brex, so a company keeping its cards elsewhere gets less from it
  • Enterprise and Smart Card are priced on request, so the top of the range is not published

Plans

Pricing

Brex

  • Essentials $0 Per user per month. Global card acceptance, AI-powered spend rules, accounting integrations, real-time reporting and bill pay.
  • Premium $12 Per user per month. Adds multiple customisable expense policies, dynamic review chains, AI compliance detection, advanced approvals, multi-entity support and live budgets.
  • Enterprise Not stated Priced on request. Adds unlimited entities, local card issuance, a named account manager, an admin centre and customisable implementation services.
  • Smart Card Not stated Priced on request. Global cards, local-currency cards in more than 50 countries and merchant card controls.

How we check reviews

Reviews are not published yet. The form on a tool's page works, and a review reaches us as soon as its author confirms it, but nothing from it appears on this site, so no score here is based on a review. The rules below are the ones that will apply once reviews go live.

Before sending, the author has to confirm three things: that they have used the product themselves, that they work neither for the vendor nor for a competitor, and that nobody is paying them for the review. We also ask whether the vendor invited them to write it. That answer is required, either answer is accepted, and it stays with the review.

Every review is read by a person before it appears. An email address is required and is confirmed: we send a link to it, and a review does not reach us until the author opens that link, so a review has a sender who was reachable at least once rather than being anonymous. Where what somebody writes needs backing, we ask them for evidence that they used the product, and a review that does not get it is not published. We publish positive and negative reviews alike, we pay nothing and offer nothing for a review, and we accept none that was bought or incentivised.

What we cannot do is verify a purchase. There is no shop here and no account, so whether the author really used the tool rests on their own declaration, on whatever we ask them for, and on the plausibility of what they write. We say so rather than implying a check that does not exist.

A vendor cannot buy a review, and cannot have one removed or changed because they dislike it. We remove or edit a review only if it breaks our rules or the law, for example a false statement of fact. Paid placement has no effect on which reviews appear or on any score.
