Overview

Confluence is Atlassian's workspace for team knowledge: pages and live docs for written work, whiteboards for visual thinking and databases for structured records, organised into spaces with their own permissions. The AI layer is Rovo: it searches across connected apps, summarises pages and comments, remixes a document into a timeline or a set of slides, and runs agents over that content. A Teamwork Graph links teams, work and goals across Atlassian products, which is where the Jira relationship matters. Cloud pricing starts with a free plan for ten users.

Our take

The case for Confluence is almost entirely about what it sits next to. On a team already running Jira, the documentation, the tickets and the AI search over both live in one account with one permission model, and that is worth more than any individual feature in the editor. On a team that is not, the same product has to be judged against Notion and Coda on its own merits, and there it is a more conventional wiki than either. Read the deployment question early rather than late: the self-managed edition now has a support end date, so an on-premise requirement is a reason to talk to Atlassian before committing, not after. And budget by headcount, because the per-user rate is quoted as an estimate that moves with the number of users rather than a flat figure.

Features

Task planning
Partly. Pages carry tasks, and databases and whiteboards organise work visually, but boards, sprints and backlogs live in Jira; the Teamwork Graph links the two rather than duplicating one in the other
Resource planning
No. Confluence carries no capacity or allocation planning
Time tracking
No. There are no timesheets in Confluence
Reporting and controlling
Rovo answers questions across connected apps and data sources and remixes page content into timelines, charts and slides; advanced analytics is listed as an Enterprise feature
Integrations and API
Yes. The Confluence Cloud REST API v2 covers pages, blog posts, attachments, comments, spaces, permissions, labels, tasks, whiteboards, databases, users and versions, with OAuth 2.0 or JWT for apps and basic auth for direct calls, and cursor-based pagination. An official Atlassian Remote MCP Server exposes Jira and Confluence to AI agents, rate-limited per plan from 500 calls an hour on Free to 1,000 on Standard

FAQ

Do I need Jira to use Confluence?
No. Confluence is sold and used on its own. The two are designed to work together though: the Teamwork Graph links teams, work and goals across Atlassian products, so a page can sit alongside the Jira work it describes.
Can Confluence still be self-hosted?
Yes, through Confluence Data Center, which is the self-managed edition and is quoted by sales. Atlassian has announced that support for Data Center ends on 28 March 2029 and is encouraging migration to Atlassian Cloud.
Can an AI agent read and write Confluence pages?
Yes. Atlassian runs an official remote MCP server that connects Jira and Confluence to clients such as Claude, ChatGPT, VS Code and Cursor. Agents can search and retrieve content and create work items and pages. It is available to all Atlassian Cloud customers, rate-limited by plan, and does not currently support FedRAMP or HIPAA.

How we check reviews

Reviews are not published yet. The form on a tool's page works and reaches us, but nothing from it appears on this site, so no score here is based on a review. The rules below are the ones that will apply once reviews go live.

Every review is read by a person before it appears. We require a working email address and use it to come back to the author, so a review has a reachable sender rather than being anonymous. We publish positive and negative reviews alike, we pay nothing and offer nothing for a review, and we accept none that was bought or incentivised.

What we cannot do is verify a purchase. There is no shop here and no account, so whether the author really used the tool rests on what they tell us, plus the plausibility of what they write. We say so rather than implying a check that does not exist.

A vendor cannot have a review removed, cannot buy one, and cannot have one changed. Paid placement and a paid listing have no effect on which reviews appear or on any score.

The overall score is the average of the six ratings above. Nothing is weighted, and a paid placement does not change a single one of them.
