Overview

GitHub Copilot is an AI coding assistant that delivers inline completions and chat across Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, the JetBrains IDEs, Neovim and Eclipse, as well as GitHub.com, the CLI and GitHub Mobile. Beyond autocompletion it offers an agent mode that plans and runs tasks autonomously, a coding agent that takes a GitHub issue through to a pull request, automated pull request review, and a choice of underlying models including Anthropic's Claude, OpenAI's GPT and Google's Gemini. Enterprise plans include IP indemnity and an option to filter suggestions that match public code.

Best for teams that live in GitHub and want one vendor for hosting, CI/CD and AI assistance.

Copilot fits teams that already build on GitHub and want AI woven through the same account they use for hosting, pull requests and CI. It runs in almost every major IDE and on GitHub.com, combines inline completions with an agent mode and an issue-to-pull-request coding agent, and lets developers pick between Claude, GPT and Gemini models. A free tier and enterprise IP indemnity make it straightforward to trial and to get approved inside a company.
