Overview
DALL·E is OpenAI's image generation, now delivered by its GPT Image models and used mainly inside ChatGPT and through the OpenAI API rather than as a standalone app. Its strength is following complex, multi-element prompts faithfully, and it handles short text and labels better than most. Editing is conversational: you describe a change or mask an area and the model revises the image in place. There are no open weights and no standalone free tier, though free access exists through Microsoft's Bing and Copilot.
Our take
DALL·E, delivered through OpenAI's GPT Image models, is the pick when prompt accuracy and tight integration with ChatGPT matter more than a distinctive artistic look. It follows complicated briefs well, edits conversationally, and is cheap through the API. There is no standalone free tier, but Bing and Copilot offer free access, and DALL·E 2 and 3 were retired from the API in May 2026 in favour of GPT Image.
