Overview
Codex is OpenAI's agentic coding tool, powered by a version of its GPT models tuned for software engineering. It shows up in four places that share one usage allowance: a CLI in the terminal, an IDE extension, a cloud sandbox that runs tasks remotely, and automated review on pull requests. You describe a task and Codex writes, runs and tests code on its own, delegating longer jobs to the cloud while you keep working. Access comes bundled with a ChatGPT plan or through the OpenAI API at token rates.
Our take
Codex fits developers already inside the OpenAI and ChatGPT ecosystem who want the same agent across the terminal, editor, cloud and pull requests under one allowance. It is bundled into ChatGPT rather than sold separately: the $20 Plus plan unlocks meaningful use including cloud task delegation, Pro raises limits from $100 to $200 per month, and Business covers teams; a free tier and an $8 Go tier exist but are limited. Because usage moved to token-based credits, heavy runs can require buying extra credits.

Features
- Where it runs
- Codex CLI in the terminal, an IDE extension, a desktop app, a cloud sandbox and automated pull request review, plus web and iOS
- Inline completions
- No, Codex is an agent rather than an inline autocomplete
- Agent mode
- Yes, it writes, runs and tests code and can delegate longer tasks to a cloud sandbox
- Model choice
- No, OpenAI's own GPT models tuned for coding
- Data control
- Three sandbox modes, read-only, workspace-write and danger-full-access, with writable roots to widen the boundary without switching the sandbox off; network access asks for approval by default. Approval policies are on-request, never or a granular set that keeps chosen prompt categories interactive and rejects the rest; the older untrusted policy is retired. In ChatGPT Work an administrator sets network access or an allowlist of hostnames, manages configuration and model availability, assigns workspace roles and reads audit events through a compliance API

No reviews yet. Nothing has been published here yet, and no score is shown. How a review is checked before it appears is described below.
How we check reviews
Reviews are not published yet. The form on a tool's page works and reaches us, but nothing from it appears on this site, so no score here is based on a review. The rules below are the ones that will apply once reviews go live.
Every review is read by a person before it appears. We require a working email address and use it to come back to the author, so a review has a reachable sender rather than being anonymous. We publish positive and negative reviews alike, we pay nothing and offer nothing for a review, and we accept none that was bought or incentivised.
What we cannot do is verify a purchase. There is no shop here and no account, so whether the author really used the tool rests on what they tell us, plus the plausibility of what they write. We say so rather than implying a check that does not exist.
A vendor cannot have a review removed, cannot buy one, and cannot have one changed. Paid placement and a paid listing have no effect on which reviews appear or on any score.
