Overview
Basware automates the life of an incoming invoice for large, multi-entity organisations, from receipt through coding and matching to approval and payment preparation. Underneath sits the Basware e-invoicing network, which accepts paper, PDF, EDI and XML and covers what the company describes as 100 or more VAT compliant countries. The platform integrates with more than 250 ERP systems simultaneously, which is the point for a group running several back-office systems at once. Basware was founded in 1985 in Finland, reports more than 6,500 customers, and publishes no price.
Our take
Basware is built for the organisation whose problem is not a single ledger but many, in many countries, each with its own invoice formats and its own tax authority. The multi-ERP design and the compliance map are what justify it, and both are wasted on a company with one accounting system in one jurisdiction; such a buyer should pick a lighter AP tool instead. The other reason to look is timing. Where e-invoicing mandates are landing, the network side stops being an efficiency argument and becomes a filing requirement, and that is the ground Basware has been standing on since well before the current wave. The commercial side is opaque, though: the pricing page describes a subscription model and names no figure, so scope, volume and entity count all have to be negotiated before anything can be budgeted.
